I had the pleasure of illustrating the book cover for the 1st prize winner of the Atom learning Youth Author Award 2022. Over 1500 children all over the UK participated in the competition. First prize was a trip to Disneyland for the whole family and a professionally illustrated book cover.
At first I wanted to make the monster really scary and menacing. I wanted to show the viewer just how scary it is to confront your own monster and how amazing it is to overcome that fear.
After a bit back and forth with the competition holders we settled on adjusting the monster to look a bit more friendly. And so I decided to go for a typography that looked less scary.
